The prosecutor's office of the Donetsk region will handle a terrible environmental disaster.
It was stated that in April of this year the representatives of the “DNR” made a decision and announced the termination of water pumping from the Enakievo mine “Yunkom”, which is located on a temporarily uncontrolled territory in the village of Bunge (formerly Yunokomunarsk). Such actions can lead to an ecological disaster, that is, radioactive, chemical contamination of groundwater and surface waters and, as a result, pollution of the ecosystem of the Sea of Azov.
The mine “Yunkom” was known by a large gas hazard, there were only 235 gas discharges recorded from 1959 to 1979, 28 of which resulted in the death of miners. In September 1979, in order to reduce the probability of sudden methane emissions in the mine, an underground nuclear explosion had been carried out, after which the mine was closed and isolated.
A glass capsule with a diameter of approximately 30 m was formed at the site of the explosion. It was filled with radioactive water, which according to the conclusions of the examination, requires relative dryness. The ingress of the radioactive liquid contained in this capsule into the water resources of the terrain through groundwater can lead to an ecological disaster, that is, radioactive chemical contamination, including the ecosystem of the Sea of Azov.
Thus, the actions of representatives of the “DNR” have signs of committing a crime under Art. 441 (ecocide) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The Prosecutor's Office of the Donetsk region has submitted information to the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations on the grounds of the crime provided by Art. 441 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Pre-trial investigation of the criminal proceedings will be carried out by the SBU in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions under the procedural direction of the prosecutor's office.
