Ukraine was granted the status of the aspirant country in NATO.

The corresponding updates were made on the official NATO website in the section on the expansion of the organization, as “Podrobnosti” reports.

“At the moment, four partner countries have declared their aspirations for NATO membership: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and Ukraine,” – the updated information of the section says.

The status of the aspirant country means that the country formally declared its interest in joining the Alliance and is invited to join the Intensified Dialogue with NATO on membership and related reforms.

According to the official NATO website, the Aspirant countries are states that have expressed their interest in joining NATO.

An additional requirement for “aspirants”: they must profess the principles of the Washington Treaty (that is, be democratic states) and the principles of the UN Charter, as well as contribute to the security of the Euro-Atlantic space.

Earlier it was reported that Georgia could become a member of NATO faster than planned. Also, NATO is going to conduct large-scale exercises at the borders of Russia.
