On Thursday, January 10, Fiona Frazer, the Head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, visited the Donetsk region and met with representatives of the command of the Joint Forces Operation. 

This is reported by the press service of the JFO.

“Compliance with the norms of international humanitarian law is one of the priorities of our country, especially in the area of ​​the JFO. In order to improve the mechanism of interaction of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with international organizations that are designed to promote the observance of international humanitarian human rights, especially in the zone of military conflicts, a working meeting was held in Kramatorsk with the head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, Fiona Frazer,” – the message said.

From the Ukrainian side, the event was attended by representatives of the command of the JFO, the State Emergency Service, the National Guard, the State Border Guard Service, the Joint Centre for Control and Coordination, the Joint Center for Civil-Military Cooperation of the JFO and the State Fiscal Service.

During the meeting, the parties exchanged data on issues that are in the area of ​​increased attention of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, namely: losses and their prevention among the civilian population in the area of ​​JFO, respect for the rights of civilians, freedom of movement of civilians, and also their death or injury as a result of careless handling of weapons.

“During the report, Fiona Frazer noted a positive dynamics in the number of civilian casualties and assured that she was ready to provide any expert assistance in the future, in particular in providing trainings and seminars for members of the working group,” – the JFO’s staff noted.

It is also reported that Frazer welcomed the creation of a working group to collect and compile information on cases of civilian casualties and deaths. It was created at the end of last year.

Also during the meeting the improvement of the conflict resolution mechanism was discussed, in particular, the exchange of relevant data and in closer cooperation, which will further contribute to ensuring the observance of international humanitarian human rights in the zone of the JFO.
