The probability of establishing a flight connection with Mariupol in the Donetsk region was discussed last year. Then, the city authorities announced their readiness to restore the airport. But the issue of opening air area over the region was then left to the ministers for consideration.
A year later the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine shared its projection. The head of the department, Vladimir Omelyan, considers the option of using the airport in Berdyansk in the Zaporozhye region instead of the airport in Mariupol. The choice in favor of Berdyansk is affected by the absence of a nearby combat zone, as in the Donbass.
“Unfortunately, from the security point of view, I will not be able to allow air travel to the airport of Mariupol. I understand that the risk is too high,” – he said.
“Nevertheless, we are considering the option of the Berdyansk airport, which is located further from the front zone, and it is quite comfortable and close to get there from Mariupol. If the parliament allocates funds for the next year, of course, Berdyansk should be among the five airports that will be reconstructed in the first place,” – Omelyan said.
