One of the local members of the community noticed illegal deforestation in the area of the Opytnyansky village council, after which he reported this to the law enforcement authorities. Thanks to this, the police managed to detain a group of six “shadow lumberjacks”, who were caught red-handed. Chainsaws and firewood were confiscated by the police.

The report says that by the time of the arrest of the attackers they had already managed to cut 8 trees down. But the number of trees destroyed would have been significantly greater if it had not been for the active position of citizens from the Vympel social group.
One of the detainees provided documents allegedly allowing felling in a given place, which caused law enforcement officers to doubt their legality.
Now the police of Bakhmut opened criminal proceedings with pre-qualification under Art. 246 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (illegal deforestation). Pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
It is reported that illegal logging is under tight control by law enforcement and local authorities. The police ask citizens who have information about the facts of illegal logging of trees to report them at 102.
