At a meeting on Wednesday, the Committee on Freedom of Speech and Information Policy supported the draft decree banning television channels to broadcast the World Cup, which will be held in Russia from June 14 to July 15, 2018.

This was written on Facebook by Olga Chervakova, the first deputy chairman of the committee.

In order to introduce a ban it is necessary that the deputies vote for it in the session hall, but the vote can not be held without a committee decision.

The draft decree No. 8343 on the banning of broadcasting of the World Cup 2018 was introduced on 11th of May by Oleg Lyashko, the chairman of the faction of the Radical Party, and Igor Mosychuk and Andrei Lozovoy, the deputies from the RP, as well as Oleg Berezyuk, the chairman of the faction “Association” “Self-help”.

The deputies propose to admit that the broadcast of matches “violates the legitimate rights and interests of Ukrainian citizens as a result of armed aggression and the temporary occupation of part of Ukraine by Russia”.

On this basis, according to the provisions of the Law “On Television and Radio Broadcasting”, Ukrainian television and radio organizations will not broadcast events that will take place in Russia within the World Cup 2018.

The right to broadcast the World Cup 2018 was bought out by the “First National” channel as far back as in 2010. But after the Russian aggression, the channel's leadership announced that the championship would not be aired. However, at the end of May, “Inter” TV channel bought out the package of World Championship broadcasts from the National Public Television and Radio Company of Ukraine. If the Rada does not ban the broadcast, the matches will be shown by “Inter” and its affiliated “NTN” channel.
